Mrs. Patty Melton’s 8th graders have been studying DNA for the past couple of weeks. The students are extracting DNA from strawberries during lab. Strawberries are used because they are octoploid meaning that they have eight copies of each type of chromosome, making the DNA easier to see. Humans are diploid, having only two copies of every type of chromosome. The students also did a lab on genetic engineered animals,during the first few weeks of school as well.
